Weber Performer Charcoal Grill 22 inch Deluxe Review

This Weber Performer Charcoal Grill is the 22 inch deluxe version. You know that you really can’t go wrong with a Weber grill and this one is no exception.

As far as grills go, this one has virtually everything you’ll need for perfect grilling. It looks great but is really a classic type of grill with added features to step it up to a deluxe model.

There are quite a few similarities between the Original Kettle Premium Grill and this one. They each use a similar type of design but the Performer takes it to another level. So is it worth paying extra for it or would you be better off spending less?

Weber Performer Charcoal Grill Features

  • 22 inch porcelain enamelled bowl and lid
  • 363 square inch cooking area
  • Hinged plated steel cooking plate
  • Removable timer
  • Built-in thermometer
  • Tuck away lid holder
  • 3 tool hooks
  • Touch-n-Go gas ignition system
  • Steel cart frame with table area
  • Rust resistant aluminum dampers
  • Glass reinforced nylon handle with heat shield
  • One-Touch cleaning system
  • Wire bottom shelf
  • 4 legs, two wheels and two locking casters
  • Storage container

You can see that there’s a lot more to this grill than meets the eye. Like the Original Kettle Premium, the enamel on the bowl and lid is fused on at 1500° f which makes it super-tuff. The 22 inch diameter gives a 363 square inch cooking area which holds a lot of food! The grill plate is hinged on both sides so that it’s easy to get to the charcoal to stoke it or to add more.

One of the main things that makes the Weber Performer charcoal grill 22 inch deluxe stand out is its Touch-n-Go gas ignition system. There’s no need for matches or lighter fuel to light the charcoal because this system does it instead. Just one touch and it will get the fire going. It’s not a gas grill, it just uses gas to light the charcoal. This makes lighting it very easy and possibly safer.

There are two charcoal baskets which sit below the cooking grate, they can be placed at the edge of the drum or in the middle. This will help to adjust the amount of smoke that reaches the food and affects the flavor. It also gives the options of either direct concentrated cooking or indirect cooking.

There’s a thermometer built into the lid so you can keep an eye on the temperature inside. A detachable digital timer is also included in case you like to time how long to cook. The lid has a shield which protects the glass reinforced handle from heating up during cooking. It also has large rust resistant dampers to control the heat and there’s a tuck away lid holder on the side of the unit so the lid stands upright and acts as a windshield.

This is a Weber One-Touch charcoal grill which means you’ll never have ash blowing around your yard making a mess. It sweeps out the ash which then falls into the steel ash catcher and it is easily removed to dispose of it without any mess.

Another standout feature of the Performer Deluxe is the steel cart frame which surrounds the grill. It provides a table area for storing food or anything really. It’s a very convenient feature. The frame houses the LCD timer and has three hooks to store tools.

There are four legs which means it’s very stable. Two of the legs are fitted with 8 inch all-weather plastic wheels and the other two have locking casters on them. A wire shelf is fitted at the bottom which is great to store things rather than put them on the floor, but it also helps with the overall stability.

A char-bin stands on the bottom shelf for storing the charcoal briskets. It’s under the table part of the frame so the charcoal is protected from the elements. The basket tilts outwards so you can take out some charcoal to feed the fire. It can hold charcoal up to a weight of 30lbs. You just place the bag of charcoal into the bin.

Conclusion

The Weber Performer Deluxe is a charcoal grill, but could in some ways be described as a gas grill too. Perhaps that’s a little unfair as the gas is used to light the charcoal and once it’s alight can be turned off. Gas canisters aren’t provided so you will have the extra expense, but it makes such a difference to lighting the grill. The electronic ignition will light the gas, which quickly lights the charcoal and you’ll be ready to grill in about 20 minutes or so. It really does make life easier!

As you would expect from Weber, this is a very well-made and top quality grill with a large grilling area and you have good control over the cooking. There’s the heat control with the dampers on the lid and the char-baskets which sit on the charcoal grate. They can be moved to create direct or indirect cooking. The baskets also help control how smoked your food is – what a great idea! The tuck-away lid holder is a good idea as the lid can also act as a windshield.

The One-Touch cleaning system means much less mess, although a couple of customers did mention they had a little difficulty removing it. This is a tried and tested system used on other Weber grills and it seems to work well.

You should be aware that full assembly is required, but don’t let that scare you as full and detailed instructions are included. The manual has 16 pages of diagrams with very little text on how to put the grill together. It might seem like a big job but most comments from customers are that it isn’t a difficult at all.

The steel cart frame is very good, it makes the whole unit very stable and provides a useful table area. Having a basket to store charcoal is also very useful, particularly as it tucks away under the unit and it holds a lot of charcoal too. The bottom shelf, wheels and lockable casters provide storage, easy mobility and stability to the Weber Performer Charcoal Grill 22 inch Deluxe, which is an outstanding piece of equipment.
